A Letter..

Dear Friend,

Don't write in a hurry a brief, hasty line;
Don't burden your friend with your worries and woes;
And, if you can't honestly say things are fine;
Just look on the bright side of bothers and blow!

Tell her news - but not gossip;
Add touches of fun;
Write of things you've enjoyed
Not the hours you regret.

For a letter like this,
That with love is begun;
And, with love at the end,
She'll be happy to get.

To paint reflections

A canvas is so small.
It’s within the confines of a snapshot.
The artist knows that all around her are other hills, mountains.
The person viewing the picture doesn’t.
A patch of deep shadow on one side can indicate a towering peak
that’s cutting off the westering sun.
A long shadow across a sunny road
suggests a tree out of vision.
An artist is likely to paint scenes
about four in the afternoon,
with long shadows slanting across vivid green turf.
A sudden darkening of the sun
seems to strike a note of fear in someone’s mind,
that someone threatening is behind, unseen.
Or dappled shadows suggest the moon shining through the trees.

Look at a reflection.
It doubles its charm.
Every tree or man has a twin.
People have always loved paintings that have reflections in them
as well as the actual scene.
It seems to add another dimension,
And in a lake scene, makes you aware of the great depth of the water,
Gives you an impact of the knowledge of how still the day must have been.
You can convey the force of a gale in a picture
by tossing branches or a scrub on some wild coast
leaning away from the prevailing sea wind,
But to convey a stillness takes more skills,
And its portrayed best of all by reflections.

But, authors, writers, paint in words.
Don’t forget that reaches more people –
The painted word – than any other gift does.
Art lovers can buy prints and masterpieces
if they are wealthy enough, I suppose,
But never as many as they would wish.
So many of the world’s art treasuries
are in galleries not accessible to everyone.
But, books go into thousands and reach all corners of the globe.
Words retain the originality and freshness
of whoever first thought them.

It’s not enough for an author to retain a picture
In his mind’s eye.
He’s got to describe them in words,
Not too hackneyed,
So that everyone who reads them,
Say someone in the middle of a continent
far away from any ocean, can see for a moment
the fiery ball of the sun shinning into a northern sea.
It was the reflections that made those sunsets So spectacular,
The fact that those changing lights painted the sea as well as the sky.

Song & Dance

Name one person who doesn’t like Bollywood masala..! [Actually there are a few.. but for the purpose of this entry.. let’s just pretend there are none ;)]
I for one, love the entertainment. Like the general public says, its leave-your-brain-at-home slapstick comedy. And, don’t forget the song and dance routine. I’m sure a few calories can be lost trying to imitate the steps. Also, increases blood circulation, I hear.. eh! Not sure.. but it does. Maybe, I need to try a few steps just to make sure.. ;)

<Pause for effect.. While I turn up the volume on my TV>

Well, I am back.. And, it’s safe to say that you will survive the jhatkas and matkas.. You will never know it unless you try. <smiles>

Apart from the comedies and dances, there are quite a few films that have made its mark. I wont name them and bore you with it.. All I can say is that these numbers are rapidly increasing. And, I have the movie buffs to thank for this. You have definitely upped your taste and style. More and more, art films are making its introductions in theaters. And, boy, do I feel the magic in the air.

But, having said and done that.. I still prefer the good-old Bollywood. I don’t mind SRK flaring his hands wide, looking up in the sky (as if).. who wouldn’t like to see Madhuri Dixit gain control of her heavy ghaghara while she swings her hips to music.. And, what about Akshay Kumar performing one of those dare-devil stunts.. (being a woman.. I don’t mind Piggy Chops jumping over loops too.) Let’s not forget the star kids debuting in the industry. Wow.. They are a force to be reckoned with.

Personally, old school is still the best. My movie collection has quite a few I watch over & over & over again! Like seriously, I can say the dialogues by-heart.. [actually, NOT.. but it’s good to have confidence in myself] But, technology is turning scenes these days. There is a barrage of new-age equipments making its existence felt now-a-days. But, I do love the evolution..

Music has taken a turn for the better too..! Thank you! You, musicians, singers, directors, truly deserve the praise. Love the melodies and tempo in the music.

Why go to Hollywood or other foreign films, when the magic is created right here in our country! And, there are lesser inspired (read: copied) stories doing the rounds these days.. [Wishful thinking, I know].

So, listen up, take notice and put on your dancing shoes..
Let’s escape to the land of romance, good vs evil and happily-ever-afters (in most cases)..
How can we ever get tired of the nothing-can-beat-us-down-heroes, (no.. seriously.. no amount of spraying bullets can stop him)
Dance-to-every-tune heroines  (who are always about 20 years junior to the heroes)
And, can-do-the-evil-laugh-at-any-given-moment-villains.. (Got to love the sound effects here)

Inspiration

Someone once asked me, “What inspires you?” I found it difficult to answer then.. And to this day I am unable to answer that question. How do artists and writers find their ideas? I am at times amazed by the sheer talent that exist in this world and the green monster (read: jealousy) fires up when I realize how incredible they are! Can I ever get to that level?
Most times I get my inspirations at night, while I lie on my warm, comfy bed, covered in my favorite quilt, staring at the ceiling, where a hint of light penetrates through my dark, supposed-to-shut-out-all-light curtains. As I lay there, I start to frame sentences and draw masterpieces in my mind. Of course, I am too lazy to get up and write or scribble it down. My so-called genius mind misconstrues and makes me think that I can remember it all at a later point. So not true! And, to this date, I fail to learn from my mistakes. Guess, my laziness has brought the death of many inspiring ideas. So, now I realize, that I can’t really blame anyone..  but myself. Humpf!
There have been so many times that I have started on projects and left it half-way. Not because I ran out of ideas but because I was too lazy to continue it through. Sometimes I wonder if I can ever sustain an idea and see it through the end. Guess, I need to find out soon enough! Or, that will be the end of this blog.
Motivation is the key! I need to keep myself motivated at all times. Watch movies, listen to music, read.. Get my hands, eye and mind dirty! Store these pieces of information in a treasure chest and retrieve it when the situation arises. Start day dreaming! Carry post-its or scrap books at all times.. Go for classes where they teach you to remember effectively (that’s going to be tough). Talk to family/ friends/ colleagues/ foes/ teachers (that one’s easy.. phew). Learn!
But, I need to prepare myself to be hit with the Writer’s Block. There have been famous people who suffered from it periodically during their prosperous careers. Ah! Here I go comparing myself to famous people <slaps herself>. Earth to Aditi.. Earth to Aditi.. First rule of creativity, Never Compare Yourself with Anyone.. and I mean Anyone!
What inspires me usually comes from my life’s experience. There you go.. I have just answered it. Or, is it what I make myself believe, because it’s the easy way out? Guess I will have to live with that fact. If not, I will have to keep walking (again) and have no hope of reaching my destination. I have heard that while traveling, it’s not the destination but the journey that matters. So will be the case with my inspiration. I can live with that. Finally!
Having said that.. I reach for my pen and paper.. Happy thoughts!

Love..

Love.. sure makes the world go round! There are times when it is over-rated and at times, under. You could even say, Simple Vs Complicated. But, however you describe it, it sure makes its presence felt.
If you would have seen the Google’s doodle this year, you would have hit the spot. Not only did it describe the true essence of the word, it made us think! At the same time, it brought a Smile to your face. Did it not just light up your mood.. and made you do the twirl. I sure played it back at least 15 times.
Valentine’s Day comes around with a series of expectations and desires! How I wish I could remember each and every Valentine’s day spent and repented! But, it would be next to impossible to travel back in time.. (if only to see our younger self and the bad fashion sense, sheesh.. what were we thinking!). Why do we put so much thought into a day, when they say Love needs to be spontaneous? We restrict ourselves into these boxes and close the lid over it. Why, oh why, do we do this! And, we never learn! Its time!
Love inspires us to do a lot of things. We sure do run around in circles and do the jigs around trees. Having said that, don’t we love doing it over & over again! That’s the crazy thing about love. We do end up doing the most hysterical and pulling-your-hair-out stuff! And, by stuff, I don’t mean the slashing of wrists and suicide attempts!  Love hurts.. but that doesn’t mean you need to GIVE UP! Rise up and smell the air. Love is omnipresent. You need to seek the strength to live and try again. That’s the beauty of love.
We often hear, read and see it in songs, books and movies.. sung, written and acted by others. But, by sharing their tales of laughter, woes and tears, we learn. Make mistakes, take the unbeaten path, and give in to temptation! How else will you write your story?  What we read and see need to be experienced. History teaches us that there are wonderful love stories present in all walks of life, be it happy or tragic. But, don’t live in the past, embrace your present and stride on ahead to the future.
I ask you now.. Is there “THE ONE”? I, for one, am not sure. We have been told over the ages to keep a look out for our “one”. But, have you realized that in keeping a keen look-out we have missed the best walking right under our noses. I believe that we make the person we are with, “The One”. We best know what we like and want. So, why do we put a definition to what we already know? Go out and hold the hand of the one you have with you. Close the doors and windows, because you already have the “One” in your arms. Stop looking out and look closer!
Love in its simplest sense, is the best! But, how else will you love if you do not open your hearts. Don’t protect it.. let it flow. Even when it does get broken, it will mend. The cracks in your heart will make you a better person. Better, because you would have treasured the good bits. And, that will make you shine through the next. Even if you remember the bad bits, its fine! It's better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all.
Smile! It shows your love through. Live this day and tomorrow, with love in your eyes, mind and heart.

Mid-Week Breather

There is nothing better than taking a mid-week break! We all need it. And, those who say “Not necessary”, are just plain old lying to themselves and others. Its like taking a breath of fresh air. A lot of us have forgotten to do that. It time to just kick your legs back (or in my case snuggle up on a chair) and start twiddling with your hair. I can’t tell you the nirvana you can attain with just this “simple” posture!  Oh, and the ideas.. they keep flowing like an unstoppable gossiping blonde! You really start to re-think the mundane and the ordinary existence you have been having until now.

Sitting here amidst nature can make you dream. Dreams, not about getting richer or prettier. Dreams that make you smile. Simple dreams, about getting time out to play Sudoku, sit in a corner & relish a bottle of nutella, watch the re-runs of “How I met Your Mother”… Make plans! Plan a trip to granma’s place to cook your favorite meal, plan a schedule for re-arranging your knick-knacks (read: bangles and earrings), plan an outing with folks for lunch.. and so on.

How often do we come around to taking a breather? Our lives are often governed by work! Do we really need to go down a lane where you already know the outcome? How long do we continue to work? Has anyone thought about what age they would like to retire? If that’s even possible, then we need to get our calendars out!

What I would like to do now, at this every moment is to, NOT think. But, since that is not happening, (it’s very difficult to make a GIRL/WOMEN to stop thinking), it’s time to take a positive approach.  So, its time! It’s the moment to enjoy the fresh air!

While you are reading this, I shall have long gotten up from my perch on the balcony seat and gone to take a swim (read: paddle) in the pool. Well, I can’t swim but do try and stop me!

Echo

In music, some of the most haunting melodies are because of the use of Echo. Isn't that a lovely word on its own, Echo? Echoes of the surf in sea-shells, of birdsong ringing back from canyon walls, valley walls. What scope are there for describing..

Scents.. for a reader to remember with nostalgia, a drift of lilac perfume, of roses, or gorse blossom with the sun on it. Must, I think, evoke a picture of it before them.

Waiting!

Laugh out loud.. In a crowded room.
Atleast one can hear you and make an effort to join you.

Well, what are you waiting for?

The Fork in the Road

My Mentor is wise in the ways of the people.
“Fear not,” she tells me often.
“You must follow your dream.”
I do and for years I am happy.
Then one day my spirit is broken.
And, there is no dream left to follow.

“You have come to a fork in the road,” she says
Her dark eyes smile and she comforts me.
“There is no end without a beginning,” she tells me.
I try to believe, I really do.
I think of her life – so worthy, blessed somehow.
She watches me, content with my understanding.
“You will find a new dream.” She promises.

I am still looking.. I am nature, still a child.
For me, the future is clear.
I long to be a healer.
Friends say, “We never amount to much.”
My heart aches.
I refuse to heed
And, seek one to teach me the way.
I find her – she challenges my beliefs.

Today, I am a healer.
I see the deep disillusionment
Feel the endless hurt of the people.
I falter, but my mentor prevails.
To heal the body, change the mind.
I am young. But, eventually, I understand.
To heal the mind and touch the spirit.

Poet-try

This poem’s being written
In a not-so-sober mood
For the mind and soul
It’s more like junk food.

However, there I feel
An adequate rhyme
But, just for now,
Maybe Gin and Lime?

Watch me stagger
While I put pen to paper
This is my expression
Not a mere caper.

So, what if I’m not
Quite in my sense..
I’m not seeing double
I’m wearing my lenses.

So I hope my poetry
Shall not be negated
When I confess
I’m inebriated.

Holly Golightly: She said it

“I've got to do something about the way I look. I mean a girl just can't go to Sing Sing with a green face.”

“I'm like cat here, a no-name slob. We belong to nobody, and nobody belongs to us. We don't even belong to each other.”

“Timber!”

“It should take you exactly four seconds to cross from here to that door. I'll give you two.”

“No. People don't belong to people.”

“It's the mistake you always made, Doc, trying to love a wild thing. You were always lugging home wild things. Once it was a hawk with a broken wing... and another time it was a full-grown wildcat with a broken leg. Remember?”

“It's useful being top banana in the shock department.”

“A girl can't read that sort of thing without her lipstick.”

“Promise me one thing: don't take me home until I'm drunk - very drunk indeed.”

“I'll never get used to anything. Anybody that does, they might as well be dead.”

“Anyone who ever gave you confidence, you owe them a lot.”

Postcard Diary..

Dear Diary,

Date: Feb 7, 2012

Stats:
Health: Cant say much.. Not much of a doctor. But, yes, all the good things in life are bad! Ironic.
Weight: Discovered that the weighing scale does lie.
Wealth: Still intact, just been 7 days since the salary came in! But, it seems to be disappearing again! Whats with this magician’s trick! Need to contact AXN to crack the code!
Mental State: What is that!

Dear Diary,
I write to you today, as I wanted to unleash my inner most thoughts. Sad, to say that it shall be read by a lot more people than you and I. Such is our story! Little goes unnoticed these days. Yes, we are in the habit of airing our dirty laundry. And, its not pretty as the streets of Italy.

I sit here on my desk, completing a traffic report for an MNC, (Let’s just say that they are a gadget-freak magnet), while listening to Above and Beyond. I am not talking about the honking and cursing here.. its more like stats and graphs. Yes, as an account manager I do need to dabble in far less interesting things in this universe. But, the music is keeping me sane. If there is such a thing..

Lunch was more interesting.. there is nothing better than home cooked food. And, to top it all, Lindt chocolates. Oh divine! Less said about that the better! But, how can a true chocoholic stop at that! I do need to make the readers salivate, to say the least. That would indeed make my job complete. But, neither am I stone-hearted or malicious.

Planning was never my forte. I would rather be led in this topic. Who wants to spend their brains cells (what little we have in today’s world) on making plans, when it takes about a second to shoot it down. I am just looking forward to spending a quiet evening, if there is such a thing in this urban city. Right this moment, I can hear the birds chirping outside my window. That in itself is uncanny. And, yes, the window is mesh-covered to keep the nature at bay!

I end this extract with a saying.. “Live for the moment”. And, that’s exactly what I intend to do. I need to reach out and grab the Lindt chocolates before they finish.

Your faithful writer,
aDiTi

The Start..

Why Start now, I wonder..
These musings in the night,
Gazing through the eyes of actors
On the idiot box
There are thoughts running through my mind
I need to pin down.
I keep glaring at the name
You do need to name it
Because without a name
There is no meaning.
Meaning, I scratch on the keys
There is a dent in my memory
I used to write a long time back
Could I muster it up all again
Guess we shall find out soon
You and I, both on this journey
Holding my breath
While the fingers do the talking.

Follow the Scent!

There is always a calm, while you shop for a perfume.
You leave your thoughts free and your mind blank.
This is so, because you can add the imagery while you select the “One”.
Often times, it leaves you clueless and at times, questioning.

No two scents are the same.
Have you have looked in the mirror
And, thought you look the same since yesterday.
NO! It’s just not possible.

Change in inevitable.
Have you looked at the sky
And, wondered if the star you see is the same
As the one twinkling last night.
You move closer, you take one step
You try to picture what you smell
Try as you might, it leaves you with
A sense of belonging.
Hold the bottle
It may not have the genie
But, then, look closer
It does offer you the WISH!
